Overview
DNS TXT verification proves domain ownership by adding a specific text record to your domain's DNS settings. This method works for any domain type — including .edu, .gov, and .mil domains where Smart Verification is not available — and doesn't require web server access.
Step 1: Get Your Verification Token
After adding a domain in Dashboard → Settings, you'll be presented with your verification token. It appears in a format like:
verusight-verify=a1b2c3d4e5f6
Copy this entire string — you'll need to add it as a TXT record.
Step 2: Add a TXT Record to Your DNS
Log in to your DNS provider and add a new TXT record with the following settings:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | TXT |
| Name / Host | @ (root domain) or leave blank |
| Value / Content | verusight-verify=a1b2c3d4e5f6 (your token) |
| TTL | Default (Auto or 3600) |
Provider-Specific Instructions
Cloudflare:
- Go to your domain → DNS → Records
- Click Add Record
- Type: TXT, Name: @, Content:
verusight-verify=YOUR_TOKEN - Click Save
GoDaddy:
- Go to My Products → your domain → DNS Management
- Click Add under Records
- Type: TXT, Host: @, TXT Value:
verusight-verify=YOUR_TOKEN - Click Save
AWS Route 53:
- Go to Hosted Zones → your domain
- Click Create Record
- Routing: Simple, Record type: TXT, Value:
"verusight-verify=YOUR_TOKEN"(with quotes) - Click Create Records
Namecheap:
- Go to Domain List → your domain → Advanced DNS
- Click Add New Record
- Type: TXT Record, Host: @, Value:
verusight-verify=YOUR_TOKEN - Click Save All Changes
Step 3: Wait for DNS Propagation
DNS changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to propagate globally. In practice, most providers propagate within 5–30 minutes.
You can check if the record is live using a terminal command:
dig TXT yourdomain.com @8.8.8.8
Look for your verusight-verify=... value in the output.
Step 4: Click "Verify DNS" in Verusight
Return to the Settings page and click the "Verify DNS" button next to your domain. Verusight queries Google DNS (8.8.8.8) and Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) to check for your TXT record, bypassing local DNS caches.
If the record is found, your domain is immediately verified.
Important Notes
- The TXT record can remain in your DNS indefinitely — you don't need to remove it after verification
- Rate limit: 15 verification attempts per 5 minutes. If you hit the limit, wait a few minutes.
- Verification tokens do not expire — you can complete the verification at any time
Troubleshooting
| Error | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| "TXT record not found" | DNS hasn't propagated yet | Wait 15–30 minutes and try again. Use dig TXT domain.com @8.8.8.8 to verify. |
| "DNS lookup failed" | The TXT record is on the wrong host or has a typo | Verify the record is on @ (root domain), not a subdomain, and the token is correct. |
| "Too many attempts" | Rate limit reached (15/5min) | Wait 5 minutes before trying again. |
