Overview
Having trouble verifying your domain? This guide covers the most common issues and their solutions, organized by verification method.
DNS TXT Record Issues
"TXT record not found"
Most common cause: DNS propagation hasn't completed yet.
- DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate globally, though most complete within 5–30 minutes
- Verify the record exists using a terminal command:
dig TXT yourdomain.com @8.8.8.8 - Look for
verusight-verify=YOUR_TOKENin the output - Check you added the record to the correct level: The TXT record must be on the root domain (
@), not a subdomain likewww - Check for typos in the token value — it must match exactly
"DNS lookup failed"
- The domain may not resolve at all — verify it's a valid, registered domain
- Your DNS provider may be experiencing temporary issues — try again in a few minutes
- If using a less common DNS provider, Verusight queries Google (8.8.8.8) and Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) resolvers
File Upload Issues
"File not accessible (HTTP 404)"
- The file must be at the exact path:
https://yourdomain.com/verusight-verify.txt - Verify by visiting the URL in your browser
- Check that your web server serves static files from the root directory
- Some frameworks (React, Next.js) need static files in a
public/folder
"File content doesn't match the verification token"
- The file must contain only your token — no extra characters, whitespace, or HTML
- Open the file in a plain text editor (not Word) to verify the content
- Some editors add invisible BOM (Byte Order Mark) characters — save as UTF-8 without BOM
"Request timed out"
- Your server must respond within 5 seconds
- Make sure the URL is accessible over HTTPS (not just HTTP)
- Check that your firewall or WAF isn't blocking requests with the User-Agent:
Verusight-DomainVerifier/1.0
"Domain resolves to a private IP address"
- This is a security protection — Verusight won't fetch files from internal/private IP addresses
- The domain must resolve to a public IP address
- If you're testing on a local development server, deploy the file to your production server instead
Email Code Issues
Code Not Received
- Check your spam/junk folder
- Ensure the recipient email address actually exists and can receive external mail
- Verify you entered an email ending with
@yourdomain.com - Try using a different email address at the same domain (e.g.,
admin@orinfo@)
Code Expired
- Verification codes are valid for 15 minutes
- Click "Resend Code" to generate a new code
- Enter the code promptly after receiving it
"Email verification is not available for this domain type"
.edu,.gov,.mil, and.acdomains cannot use email verification- Use DNS TXT or File Upload verification instead
Rate Limit Errors
"Too many attempts. Please wait a few minutes."
Verusight enforces rate limits to protect against abuse:
| Method | Limit |
|---|---|
| Email code verification | 5 attempts per 15 minutes |
| DNS / File verification | 15 attempts per 5 minutes |
Solution: Wait the specified time and try again. Do not repeatedly click the verify button — each click counts as an attempt.
Smart Verification Issues
"Smart verification is not available for this domain type"
.edu,.gov,.mil, and.acdomains are restricted- Use DNS or file verification
"Please verify your email address first"
- Smart Verification requires a verified account email
- Check your inbox for the verification email from Verusight
- If the link expired, go to Settings and click the banner to resend
"Email domain does not match"
- Your account email domain must exactly match the domain you're adding
- Example:
[email protected]can verifycompany.com, but notsub.company.com
General Tips
- Use the same browser session throughout the verification process — don't switch browsers or clear cookies mid-verification
- Try a different method if one isn't working — DNS and file verification are always available regardless of domain type
- Allow time for DNS propagation — this is the most common reason for DNS verification failures
